Two winters on, the stumps are still standing
Ask anybody on Hawkins Branch Road where they were on the night of December 9, 2023. That is the house the survey team recorded as losing its roof and its porch, and it is the last mile of a track that had already come thirty-five miles from Madison before it crossed Highway 231 into this county and gave out near Shephard Hollow Lane.
What matters two winters on is how the trees failed. Wind at that strength breaks trunks, and a broken trunk leaves everything below the break exactly as it grew - no lifted soil, no tilt, nothing loosened. Owners took a chainsaw to what was left, cut it at a comfortable height, and stopped there.
So the hollows are full of squat, weather-grayed stubs standing in pasture and yards that people would quite like to have back.
Storm wood has things in it that wood does not
A tornado drives material into standing timber. What comes out of these stumps is roofing grit, staples, sections of tin, fence wire and now and again a piece of somebody's outbuilding, all of it under bark that has since weathered hard over the top of it.
So every storm stump on this side of the county gets treated as contaminated until proven otherwise. Bark comes off the working face first, a detector goes over the base, and anything metal comes out with a bar. The alternative is finding it with a carbide tooth at full speed, which costs teeth and throws shrapnel at whatever is standing nearby.
A snapped spar is more wood than you think
Diameter tells you very little here. What you are looking at is a section of trunk, not a rotted crown, and beneath it sits an undisturbed system that has kept doing its job since the night the top came off. Nothing has softened, nothing has settled, and the wood a foot down is as good as the wood at the cut.
That makes for honest, predictable grinding with more material in it than a decayed stump of matching width, and it makes depth worth settling in advance. Six to eight inches puts grass back over it. If the ground is going into hay or pasture with a bush hog running across it, we take it lower, because a hidden root ridge four inches down will find a mower blade eventually and the blade will lose.
Branch hollows, big tracts, wet bottoms
Addresses along Browning Branch Road average about ten acres apiece, and the land runs back off 231 into branch hollows - white oak on the slopes, cedar, hackberry and locust down in the flatter ground. The bottoms are the part to be careful with. The flash flood of May 11, 2016 put water across Browning Branch Road, and ground down in those hollows recovers slowly after any real rain.

It has been two years now. Is the stump too far gone to grind, or not far enough?
Two years is barely anything to a sound root plate. Cedar, locust and oak will all still be solid wood, and a snapped tree never had its roots disturbed in the first place. If anything the bark coming loose makes our life easier, because it exposes whatever the storm drove into the trunk. Rot only starts to help after five years or more, and only in the soft species.
Will insurance pay for stump grinding after storm damage?
Sometimes, and it usually turns on whether the tree hit something insured. Policies often cover removing a tree that struck a structure and exclude the stump left behind, or cap the whole thing at a set figure. Read your own wording, then ask us for an itemised invoice with the stump priced separately - that is the document adjusters actually want to see.
Can you take the standing part down too, or does it have to be cut first?
If it is low enough to reach safely we can take it down as part of the grind. Anything tall is a felling job and that needs a tree crew, not a stump grinder - we do stumps and we will say so rather than talk you into something we should not be doing. Once it is on the ground at waist height or below, it is ours.
How fast can you get here if a tree comes down on a building?
Same day or the next one. Anything leaning on a house, a barn or a line goes straight to the top of the list ahead of routine work, and out here that is a ten-minute drive rather than a planning exercise. Call rather than text for that one, and send pictures afterwards so we know what to bring.
Do you charge more because of the metal?
Storm stumps are quoted with clearing time built in rather than as an extra tacked on later. Stripping bark, running a detector and pulling wire adds maybe half an hour to a single stump, which is far cheaper than the teeth would be. If we find something that cannot be removed we will tell you before grinding and let you decide.
